Very large original oil on canvas nautical scene with ship "Opawa" signed M. Jeffries, Early 20th Century.
Signed lower left and titled verso, presented in a solid wood frame. Overall in excellent colour and detail, some light surface scratch marks to canvas top right as shown.
The sailing ship Opawa was built in 1876 and was 1076 tons gross. She was part of the New Zealand Shipping Company from 1876-1899 and then with the S O Stray, Norway, and renamed the Aquila, from 1899-1917. She was torpedoed in the North Sea on 14 March 1917. Opawa was sold in 1899 to S. O. Stray and took Norwegian registration, being renamed Aquila. She survived under her new name until she was torpedoed in the North Sea on 14 March 1917.
