A delightful oil on canvas board, nautical scene of the world famous working quay in Newlyn Cornwall. Featuring various boats, sea wall and a distant Penzance.

Titled verso “Red Boat, Old Quay, Newlyn” dated 1987 and signed lower centre.

Bernard studied at Liverpool College of Art and Camberwell School of Art, south London, where he was tutored by Martin Bloch. As with Bloch, good drawing and composition were important features of Bernard's work.

After moved to Newlyn, Cornwall in the late 1970s, he and his wife Audrey set up the Mount's Bay Art Centre where they taught landscape painting to students from all over the world for a quarter of a century.

Bernard was a familiar figure around Newlyn's harbour front and the fish market, an area he regarded as his workplace. Days before he died he was busy completing what was to be his last painting, yet another study of the harbour.

He exhibited widely throughout Britain and, in contrast to his Newlyn paintings, in recent years made a series of works depicting Thameside locations from Westminster to Canary Wharf.

He was a treasurer and chairman of the Newlyn Society of Artists.

Presented in a period wooden frame, ready to hang.
